About the Event
In this 3-part workshop you will learn how to write and notate your own songs without words on the Native American Style Flute. Â Students will begin to discover and refine their own musical creative process as well as share ideas and methods with others. This is a creative workshop and there is no right or wrong way to write your music. Collaboration and mutual inspiration can be incredibly enriching!
Class 1 will cover:
- Common song structures and techniques
- Free form songs
- Sources of inspiration
- Recording and notating your songs
- Use of embellishments and alternative notes
- Beginning your first song
In Class 2, students will have the opportunity to play their song-in-progress for the class and give and receive suggestions from other classmates. We will also discuss:
- Defining and refining your unique creative process.
- Creating your own library of phrases and techniques.
- The importance of balance between sound and silence.
- Additional song structures and techniques.
- Revise and polish your song – how to know when it’s finished.
Finally in Class 3 we will deepen our discussion on creative techniques and methods and review and/or perform our final songs. We will explore how to integrate the creation of music into our daily lives and to deepen that process.
This is a relaxed, yet intensive workshop. Class size is limited to ensure that every participant has a chance to learn, grow and create.
Students are required to have taken the Leaning Native American Style Flute workshop and to have a clear understanding of the primary scale of the flute. Knowledge of embellishments is also helpful, but not a requirement.Â
